She is hitting the gym as many as six times a week, tackling with determination any of the challenges that come her way, whether it’s rope climbing, burpees, candlesticks or running.
In fact, it was because she was tired, packing a few extra pounds, and wishing for the her old self – the one who studied fitness and health in college, played sports and ran. – that pushed her into joining MCF.
Plus, she said, “I want to be around for a long time to see my 10-year-old son Arlen grow up. I wanted to do something new, and get my old self back.
But she was given a friendly greeting from Coach Chris, recognized a few athletes, and did the strength training and workout of the day (WOD). And she survived.
“CrossFit has changed my life. I have worked hard and am very proud of myself. Sometimes I still catch myself and say I can’t do this, then I change my tune and say I can or I will try,” said Tanya, who has signed up for a fun competition in April and her first beginner CrossFit competition at the UG Series in Wasaga Beach this summer.
While she enjoys the challenge of lifting weights and the constantly varied training, it’s the people who keep her coming back.
“We care about each other,” she said.
“I want thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for all your support, knowledge and encouragement, this last year. To all the trainers as well, Chris, Bridget, Karen, Nessie, Pete, Rick, Jeff, Kristyn and Nicki. I hope I didn’t forget anyone. I feel great and have gotten my self-confidence back and can’t believe the stuff I am doing. I’m even down three sizes. I remember what Chris once said to me: ‘T, it’s not gonna get easier, you’re gonna get more awesome!’ I feel great and can’t wait to learn more things,” Tanya said.
As always, though, there is that one nagging goat that she’s working hard to overcome: The squat snatch. With a bit of work, she plans to conquer it, along with pull ups and double unders.
A highlight of her year came last February during the CrossFit Open when she selected to be on the MCF Incredibles team, headed by Coach Karen.
“I had just a few weeks under my belt, and couldn’t believe anyone would want me on their team. But they took me under their wing, and I did it. It was hard, but I completed what I could. I had a blast. Now this year, I am stronger and can do the movements, and have even have been doing Level 2s in the WODs,” she said.
The coaches love Tanya’s smiling face and gritty determination. When she sets her mind to something, there’s very little that can be done to talk her out of it. When she decided she was going to do a rope climb, she focused like a laser on that goal. She listened to everything the coaches told her to do and, most importantly, she did those things! And sure enough, up the rope she went.
“I look forward to many more years in CrossFit, and having a healthy lifestyle of eating good food and working out. I want to be strong for my son and let him know if you put your mind to it anything is possible.”
